Open source projects are collaborative pieces of software, that many times out perform the software giants products. Open source means that anyone can look an see how the software does whatever it does. There are still copyrights, but usually you can alter and add functions as long as the original credits are left. Often the originator, will add new features to his project when someone else develops them. Firefox is much smaller and can do many more functions than its competitors. Close source programs (you can't look at how it works) may do things you are not aware of. Best of all, open source project are usually free, as the two below are.
